Girls’ Track
This year the Urbana High School girls track team is hoping to improve over last year. Last season the Lady Tigers took six events to the state meet in May, and this year’s goal is to take even more.
The girls’ team has made a few coaching changes. Assistant Coach Cristina Godoy stepped down and Peter Breit, who is also the assistant cross-country coach, has taken her place.
The Tigers had their first meet last weekend at Illinois State University in Bloomington. The meet went great for the Lady Tigers. Shelby Stevenson placed second in pole vault. “Everyone did good and we are looking forward to the next two indoor meets,” said Sophomore Heather Shrum.
The team’s next meet is the Big Twelve indoor conference on Friday, March 12. Following that meet, they have their annual Gene Armor Invitational at the University of Illinois’ armory. The team hosts this meet with over 80 teams and is done to honor Gene Armor, a former superintendent who did a lot for the men and women’s track team.
Coming up over spring break is indoor state where the coaches are trying to take as many girls as possible. The team already has a number of events going to the indoor state meet, and over the next two meets hopes to get more girls qualified for it. “It was exciting to make it to state and and a great experience, and hopefully more people will qualify this year,” said Sophomore and track State Qualifier Lateshia Dove.
The Lady Tigers are currently selling Krispy Kreme donuts as a fundraiser. The donuts sell for six dollars a dozen, and can be purchased from a track member. The donuts will be delivered on April 1 and will be fresh because Coach Boscolo will be picking them up from Indiana that day.
